Ehime University’s Nanyo Fisheries Research Center promotes research that is mainly useful for the development of the aquaculture industry. Founded in Euthynnus affinis (Cantor, 1849) is a small tuna, a southern fish that is widely distributed along the tropical and subtropical Pacific coasts. The amount of natural Eastern little tuna landed is extremely small, and it has been attracting attention as a “phantom fish” because it is rarely shipped to the markets in big cities. Ehime University, in cooperation with Ehime Prefecture and local producers, succeeded in completely farming Eastern little tuna, which had little experience in farming or rearing. In 2013, full-scale research began in 2013 with the aim of developing “complete aquaculture,” in which fish are hatched from eggs, rather than the general aquaculture that raises them from juveniles.
