Plums migrated from Japan to California in the middle of the 19th century, crossed with American plums, and improved. After this was reimported, it was further improved, and now many varieties are on the market. Plum is the English name for plums. Cultivation began in Yamagata Prefecture around the 1970s, and over 80% of the production is produced in the inland Murayama area. In recent years, it seems that more and more young producers are making large-ball, sweet, high-value-added varieties. Plums are cold-resistant and can withstand high temperatures and dryness, so it seems that they will not bear fruit if exposed to frost during the flowering period. In addition, it seems that the suitable place is a place where there is little rain during the flowering and harvesting periods, and there is good drainage and sunlight, and the soil is deep.
Until 2014, plum cultivation in Oe Town was harvested from the end of June to the end of August. Pick-up is possible. In particular, “Sun Rouge Sumomo” has a high sugar content, sourness, and a rich taste, so it has been highly evaluated in the market, and it seems that it has changed the image of plums so far. There are 42 plum producers in the town, with a cultivation area of 20 ha and a harvest of 105 tons (produced in 2013), which seems to be increasing year by year.
At the end of August 2022, in Oe Town, Nishimurayama District, one of the prefecture’s leading plum-producing areas, varieties such as the large ball “Queen Mercury Plum” reached their peak harvest. The plums are growing well, and the total shipment value of plums within the JA Sagae Nishimurayama area is expected to exceed 200 million yen for the third consecutive year. This variety was selected by Seiichi Watanabe of Oe Town (Chairman of OSIN, Chairman of JA Sagae Nishimurayama Plum Department, Director of Oe Town Tourism Association, etc.) from natural hybrid seedlings of Sunrouge Plum. The fruit shape is flat and the fruit weight is 150-200 g. The pericarp is greenish-yellow in color and the front of the fruit is colored dark red. The flesh is pale yellow, medium firm, low in sourness and juicy, and has a strong sweetness. The long shelf life is fertile. The tree is strong and medium in shape. fertility. Requires a pollinator. It seems that the harvest season is long from late August to mid-September in Oe Town, Nishimurayama District, Yamagata Prefecture.
