According to NARO, the degree of canker disease occurrence compared to common lemons under normal pest control in the cultivation area (Fruit Research Institute citrus research Okitsu base: Shizuoka City) and the prototype test in citrus production areas nationwide is clearly low and seems to show strong resistance. A variety with strong tree vigor, straight branches, and few thorns. The occurrence of scab disease is almost non-existent. The number of flowers is large, the biennial results are low, and it is expected to produce abundantly and stably. The mature fruit is harvested in late November, and seems to ripen about a month earlier than the existing Lisbon and Meyer lemon varieties. The peel color is greenish-yellow to orange-yellow, and the fruit surface is smooth. Ease of peeling seems to be superior to Lisbon lemons and can be peeled by hand. With a peel thickness of 3 mm, it is thinner than Lisbon lemons and Meyer lemons, and it has a slightly less fragrance. The size of the fruit is about 200 g, which is one size larger than existing varieties. In addition, the pulp ratio is 79% and the juice ratio is 50%. The sugar content of the juice is 9.2%, and the acid content is about 5.6%. It has fewer seeds than Lisbon lemons and Meyer lemons, and it seems to produce seedless fruits.
According to the local cuisine of the house listed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, “lemon steak” seems to be a local specialty dish that began to be popular around 1955 in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Due to the fact that the US Navy base was built in Sasebo shortly after the war, it seems that American steak became popular early on in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the brothers, who worked at a Western-style restaurant that opened in 1955, devised a steak with a refreshing flavor that would suit the palate of Japanese people. It seems that it was named “lemon steak” because lemon juice is added to the Japanese-style sauce that is poured just before the meat is cooked.
Lemons are very susceptible to canker disease, which is a big problem in environments with a lot of rain. For this reason, it seems that about 90% of the lemons consumed in Japan currently depend on imported products. Therefore, NARO has developed a new variety of lemon, “Rinoka”, which is resistant to canker disease, in order to meet the demands of consumers who want domestic products. ‘Rinoka’ is a cultivar created by crossing ‘Lisbon’ lemons with Hyuganatsu pollen. Therefore, it is a hybrid of the citrus genus on the cultivar registration, but it seems that it is trying to spread as a new cultivar of lemon because its appearance and expected usage are similar to lemons. Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri forms brown corky lesions on leaves, fruits and green branches. Navel oranges and lemons are the weakest, and other mid-late citrus fruits are also weak. These cultivars have large lesions, so they seem to lose their commercial value. Although it is hardly a problem with unshiu mandarin oranges, it is relatively weak in high-sugar unshiu. Diseased leaves tend to fall off easily, and disease on petioles in particular promotes leaf fall. Pathogenic bacteria infect through stomata and wounds. Wind damage and feeding damage by the mandarin leaf moth encourage the onset of the disease. Rapid increase after typhoon hit. It seems to be more frequent in warm winter years and in the year after a typhoon hits in autumn. Heavy rain from around one month after germination promotes the onset of the disease. It seems to occur frequently in windy gardens.
