This is the northern limit production area for group pears. The difference in temperature between day and night causes the sugar content to increase, creating sweet, juicy pears. In the Meiji era, it overcame the difficulties of pests and diseases, and became established as a rare inland production area without Japan in Akita Prefecture, making our hearts dance. In addition, it is said to be “Hokugen no Nashi” because it is the latest in Japan to be shipped, and it is highly rated by the market and consumers as well as its high quality.
Pear production is thriving in the Nakayama district in the southeastern part of Odate City, and 32 farms seem to be cultivating pears and Japanese pears. The main product, Kosui pears, is harvested in mid-September. From mid-September, the harvest will switch to Hosui pears, from late September, Chojuro pears, and in October, Akizuki pears. The line-up in the Nakayama district and the neighboring Magata district is jam-packed.
So far, the explanation of pears has been completed. Dioscorea yam (kind of yam) began to be cultivated within the same JA jurisdiction 44 years ago, in 1978, from Sannohe, Sannohe District, Aomori Prefecture. It seems that the introduction of seed potatoes was the beginning. At first, there were 6 people planting, but in 1980, the year I was born, a subcommittee of 88 people was formed. Since it was originally produced in a warm region, there are many problems, and it seems that various efforts have been made to increase production. I hear that they have energetically conducted inspections, market training, seminars, gatherings, and demonstration tests in order to acquire the technology. Thanks to the concerted efforts of the department members and other related organizations, shipments peaked in 1988, with 396 department members shipping 486 tons. However, on the other hand, this year was also the year when the price plummeted, and it goes without saying that it was heartbreaking to hear that the unit price of 10 kg was less than half of the previous year and that the producers were greatly shocked.
