In the production area of mandarin oranges, there are many strong fans of greenhouse mandarin oranges produced in Kumamoto Prefecture. The sale period is from early June to August, and it is famous as a mandarin orange that is shipped just in time for the midsummer festival. ‘Mikan’ is the only greenhouse-grown citrus that can be enjoyed in the summer as a sweet citrus fruit. The seasonal greenhouse-grown house green mandarin oranges are nothing but the gifts of individual producers who have a reputation for their sweetness.
It was around 1996 that a light sensor was introduced to Wenzhou mandarin oranges. In 2022, JA Kamoto began shipping green house mikan, which boasts the largest production volume in the prefecture, in mid-June. It seems to have peaked in mid-July and continued until the end of August. The 2022 production is gearing up to ship 160 tons, mainly to Tokyo, Osaka and Kumamoto. Contrary to its green appearance, green house mandarin oranges are characterized by their ripe orange flesh.
