Obanazawa watermelon, whose shipments are concentrated from July to August, is one of the best summer watermelons. In the rare climate of the Murayama Basin, farmers in Obanazawa are trained to help produce excellent agricultural products. Farmers spend busy days growing agricultural products that are sensitive to temperature and humidity. The watermelon, which has been lovingly added with organic fertilizer, is even more delicious.
It is said that the cultivation of watermelon in the Obanazawa area began around 1953 by a pioneer farmer in Obanazawa City for the Sendai market. After that, with the support of the Obanazawa Agricultural Improvement Extension Center and Agricultural Cooperatives, as a result of efforts to develop technologies such as selection of appropriate varieties and multi-cultivation in the area, the delicious “Obanazawa watermelon” became popular and spread to the neighborhood. My grandparents are also familiar with me, and I have listened to them many times in my childhood and enjoyed them. The feelings that permeate my body are still alive and well. Until around the 1985s, watermelons in this region were sold under brands such as “Hanagasa watermelon” and “Benibana watermelon” in each region, but now they are sold under the unified brand of “Obanazawa watermelon”.
Obanazawa watermelon can be shipped with a sugar content of 11 degrees or higher. Especially excellent agricultural products are not only sweet in the central part, but also sweet in the whole to the skin. After all, it is a land with a very large daily temperature difference, where the temperature drops suddenly at night, so it is probably the best for cultivation.
